Report on forest inventory in Kuiburi national park
Abstract
The objective of this research was to evaluate tree density, basal area and tree volume in Kuiburi national park and in the ecological corridor area between Kuiburi and Kaeng Krachan national parks. The point sampling technique was utilized to conduct the surveys. A number of 187 cluster plots were randomly selected and for each cluster 5 points were surveyed. The distance between each cluster was 2.5 km. This sampling design efficiently covered the whole study area.
The results show that the tree volume in each of the following land cover types are: moist evergreen forest 227.07 m3/ha, hill evergreen forest 225.72 m3/ha, upper dry evergreen forest 189.49 m3/ha, middle dry evergreen forest 158.85 m3/ha, moist evergreen-bamboo forest 147.91 m3/ha, lower dry evergreen forest 145.14 m3/ha, dry evergreen - mixed deciduous forest 114.08 m3/ha, mixed deciduous forest 82.35 m3/ha, secondary forest 41.71 m3/ha, bamboo forest 17.61 m3/ha, agricultural area 2.80 m3/ha, and dry dipterocarp forest 1.33 m3/ha.
The tree density calculated in each of the land cover type surveyed is: lower dry evergreen forest 2,014 trees/ha, dry evergreen - mixed deciduous forest 1,617 trees/ha, middle dry evergreen forest 1,392 trees/ha, moist evergreen forest 1,282 trees/ha, upper dry evergreen forest 1,245 trees/ha, mixed deciduous forest 1,082 trees/ha, hill evergreen forest 1,040 trees/ha, moist evergreen-bamboo forest 909 trees/ha, secondary forest 881 trees/ha, dry dipterocarp forest 210 trees/ha, agricultural area 33 trees/ha, and bamboo forest 17 trees/ha.
The tree basal area found in each of the land cover types surveyed is: moist evergreen forest 30.30 m2/ha, hill evergreen forest 29.78 m2/ha, upper dry evergreen forest 24.75 m2/ha, middle dry evergreen forest 25.11 m2/ha, lower dry evergreen forest 22.88 m2/ha, moist evergreen-bamboo forest 19.08 m2/ha, dry evergreen - mixed deciduous forest 17.70 m2/ha, mixed deciduous forest 14.00 m2/ha, dry dipterocarp forest 9.00 m2/ha, secondary forest 7.41 m2/ha, bamboo forest 2.25 m2/ha and agricultural area 0.46 m2/ha.
